@taylorlorenz our #politicians#congress critters etc should wear patches of the companies they own the most stock in like race car drivers so we know who they are driving for #tiktok
This is what the TikTok app logs about you when you use it.
Read everything in the picture very carefully!
The worst part is that this amount of logging (and sometimes much more logging) is very common from many tech companies, especially from Meta and Microsoft.
These companies literally owns you! Let it sink in.
but i don't understand so many people's takes, including here on #mastodon, disappointingly (i would think your average #fediverse enjoyer is here because they are aware of the scope of the problem): this false choice, "well other things exist that are bad, so we'll ignore this bad thing right here"
what?
just condemn all of it, facebook, twitter, #youtube, tiktok, etc, as privacy defiling psyop disinfo filth
If the other social-media giants are as bad as TikTok — as the what-about-ers point out — the proper question still isn't "Why TikTok?" but "Why not TikTok?"
When you're cleaning house, you have to start somewhere — you can't dust all the rooms at once.
In a blockbuster vote earlier this week, the U.S. House of Representatives easily passed a bill that would force TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell or the app would be banned in the United States. @theverge explores how the revived bill “jumped suddenly from the pile of forgotten ideas.” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), who authored the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, told reporters “The fact that we didn’t leak the content of those negotiations to the media, it’s just a function of how serious our members were.” https://flip.it/xzzXQi #Tech#Technology#TikTok#ByteDance#USPolitics
The parent company of #TikTok, ByteDance, functions as a joint venture in which the government is both a partner and the ultimate boss.
According to Shaomin Li, who has studied China’s economy and business for 40 years, both ByteDance and the Chinese Communist Party know who’s in charge, even if that relationship isn’t reflected in ownership and law.
He says that’s why it wouldn’t be enough for TikTok’s data to live on a US server.
