Holy shit, I thought I knew how evil the industry was but here we are:

Two-thirds of European websites just ignore your choice and track you anyways, researchers from found. 🤯

Today, we have opened five non-compliance investigations under the Digital Markets Act.

It concerns:
🔹Alphabet’s rules on steering in Google Play
🔹Alphabet’s self-preferencing in Google Search
🔹Apple’s rules on steering in the App Store
🔹Apple's choice screen for Safari
🔹Meta’s ‘pay or consent model’

Having attended most of last week's compliance workshops in person, I was already convinced that the EU Commission would have no choice but to investigate if it doesn't want to lose all credibility for the ; the gatekeeper's circumvention attempts are just too blatant to ignore.

I wasn't sure they would act so swiftly though, so thank you @EU_Commission ! 👏

🎉 The folks at @algorithmwatch and have made a formal data access request to the 🇩🇪 under the new .

They seek to obtain access to internal data to check whether and how the company is making sure its not-so-intelligent isn't bullshitting around in dangerous ways.

Kudos to @olivermarsh and for leading this work!

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars In a Brussels suburb we've got all of those things within max 15min walking except a gas station, a sports arena and a movie theatre.

Here is what the could enable if no checks and data collection limits are put in place:

--> "Private UK health data donated for medical research shared with insurance companies"
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/nov/12/private-uk-health-data-donated-medical-research-shared-insurance-companies

Because of:

  • Unclear legal bases for processing sensitive records
  • A data maximisation policy in the law
  • Ambiguous data categories and definitions
  • No requirement or right for patients
