So I want to get my #podcast back up but have been thinking about moving hosting providers. Currently with #Podbean, which has been easy to use and relatively cheap as far as I can tell. I've been interested in #Castopod given the Fedi-compatibility. Anyone have thoughts on Castopod? Their managed offering is quite a bit pricier than Podbean.
Surprised @jerry doesn't run a Castopod instance in the #jerryverse... maybe infosec.audio needs to exist? I'd definitely be willing to support with $$ š
For good reason, Iām very concerned that Fediverse developers are stuck with the mindset that āFediverse = Mastodonāāeven when they, themselves, develop non-Mastodon services.
So itās important to remember this: though Mastodon is 70% of the (non-Threads) Fediverse, last year it was 90%. More and more people are using services like Misskey, Akkoma, Sharkey, Friendica, Lemmy, micro.blog, etc.
Software on the Fediverse is becoming more diverse. While Mastodom serves many peopleās needs, it does not serve everyoneās needs.
Personally, I run Akkoma because I must be efficient with my resources. Mastodon is great for people running communities but it can be overkill for small servers like my own.
...and #Castopod, the opensource, decentralized, federated self-hosting podcast platform, just hit Softaculous, meaning that many people with a hosted domain somewhere can install it with just a click of a button.
Even NameCheap hosting authorized it in their free #Softaculous offerings.
Are there any internet radio standards people on the fedi I can follow? whos working on streaming standards? @gabek does Owncast support any streaming audio standards?
This podcast has been a long-time coming. Damon, Laurens, and I have been hard at work interviewing all kinds of people building for the Fediverse, and after hours and hours of interviews, weāve finally started publishing episodes....
Fediverse podcast hosting platform Castopod has released a discovery platform for all the podcasts that are hosted on Castopod. You can find the index at https://index.castopod.org/. It gives a nice visual overview of all the podcasts, which you can filter by category, language, or any search term you want.
In order to build this index, Castopod uses the Podcast Index Database. Incidentally, the Podcast Index is currently working on building a bridge between their database and the fediverse. Developer Dave Jones released the code for the alpha version this week. This bridge allows you to follow podcasts directly in your fediverse client. The bridge is still in active development, but a sneak peek can be seen here.
Hello helpful friends of the Fediverse! I am considering a major rearchitecture of my site, https://shellsharks.com (and adjacent properties) and wanted to get some advice/tips from the wider #indieweb, #blogging, #openweb, #webdev, #webdevelopment communities out here. (Sorry for the long read!)
Currently, my site is hosted on Github Pages which uses #jekyll for static site generation. I've been using this for nearly 5 years and for the most part have no complaints. The service has decent uptime, is pretty customizable (custom CSS, JS, etc...) and after all this time I am pretty comfortable using it. Some things I am interested in though in terms of re-architecting...
Fediverse / ActivityPub compatibility - #wordpress has gone live with their AP plugin and sites like micro.blog (I think) have some direct AP functionality. I'm interested in exploring this but it's not necessarily a must-have. More on Fediverse point of presence later...
IndieWeb functionality - I've baked in as much IndieWeb stuff as I can reasonably do with Jekyll hosted on Git Pages but would be interested in WebMention and other more advanced capabilities if offered by another platform / static-site generator.
I've toyed with the idea of self-hosting the blog (on AWS or something), while still using an SSG of some kind. There could be some benefits with adding more dynamic content or having more autonomy over my site but not sure if it'd be worth additional costs or headache trying to manage.
Writing (or generally producing "content") has always been something I do out of pure enjoyment but I've considered trying to monetize in some way. What are some platform considerations if I wanted to monetize say, a podcast, newsletter, video courses, premium articles, etc...
--
Other adjacent properties I'm looking to "re-design"...
My #podcast is currently hosted on #Podbean, which I have liked so far but I'd like to further embrace the Fediverse so have considered moving to #Castopod. Any advice on hosted vs. self-hosted? Are there other non-Castopod fediverse options?
As of right now, my presence in the Fediverse is mostly on infosec.exchange where I post stuff from my site. I've considered hosting my own instance of Mastodon (or something similar) to be my main account or even just as an official "shellsharks the site" account. I've seen accounts of people going down this path and ultimately bailing due to costs, time overhead, etc...

If there are noticeable benefits to making any significant changes I'd be willing to take that on as a project for 2024. Otherwise, I might just stick with what I have and focus on writing/research =). Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to read / respond!
We'll make a call out for people interested in #Castopod as one example of a service we might offer https://castopod.org - fediverse enabled podcast hosting!
@dansup was looking for @Castopod software servers on #FediDB and didn't find it. Not positive how many exist in the wild, but is that something you are looking for in our indexing? #Castopod
I'm really interested in moving a podcast from Spreaker to Castopod, though I have no interest in self-hosting it at this time. Does anyone have any insight into what the pros and cons might be for such a move? Thanks in advance! #AskMastodon#AskFedi#Fediverse#Castopod#Spreaker#podcast#podcasting
Hallo Fediverse!
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a.
Wenn Ihr also Anregungen oder ErgƤnzungen habt, gerne her damit! Danke!
In a few weeks @w3c social web community group meeting may receive a proposal to explore chartering new social web working group that would only be open to people who work at W3C member companies. (The CG is open to all). Today there was an in person discussion at TPAC, the yearly W3C-wide f2f. It was a day-of addition to the agenda. Now is a good time to join the CG, subscribe to mailing list, and start participating in the discussions. https://www.w3.org/community/SocialCG/#vote#activitypub
