Can you imagine working for Google with a straight face on technology like this and just sleeping at night? Fucking nuts right? Like you think you’re changing the world but you’re just making sure teens get 0.2% more ads for Ozempic per day than before. These people do it then go to chipotle and get a burrito like a sociopath.

Google was caught tracking users' browsing even when they had enabled "incognito mode". In the settlement of a lawsuit, Google has agreed to destroy the data it thus collected. Abuses like tracking the actions of users cannot be excused by mere consent.

Destroying the data collected by without destroying the software programmed with those data through statistical optimization techniques (improperly called ) won't change anything for the victims.

Promotional videos had actors pose as the founder of bogus apps, but made the mistake of using two different people play someone with the same name!

Even if something is broken, you can debug and fix it easily or use some workaround.
You don't need to wait until service is retired and some new buggy in other way service with confusing name appears after that.

kudos to google for offering a free option to keep AI out of search results

shansterable ,

@april
I'd considering paying to keep AI OUT of my search results.

Now THERE'S a business model:

  1. Create and hype a "groundbreaking new technology"
  2. Proliferate the technology widely
  3. Watch it predictably hallucinate snippets of lies and nuggets of corporate liability
  4. Witness the public recoil from the horror
  5. Witness corporate subscribers dump the service in the wake of lawsuits
  6. Having unleashed a scourge on society in the name of efficiency and innovation, business now charges to "protect" you from the monster it created

Instead, Google is so deep into the punch bowl of AI Kool-Aid, they still believe AI is worth paying for. Sunk costs are bitch.

I'm concerned about the quality of Google search results. Lately, I'm seeing Reddit links dominate the top spots, even when they're not the most relevant sources. Is there a reason for this? DuckDuckGo is giving out better results. What is going on? 🤔 Btw, if you connected to the vpn and not logged into the Reddit, you get lovely fake message from Reddit. The official Reddit app is crap too. What do you think?

Interestingly Google is considering putting its AI-driven search function behind a paywall as part of their premium service.

However, given the experience of many people being able to avoid AI-driven search may be a bonus.

In sort of looks like a reverse enshitification (h/t @pluralistic ) - the shitty service disappears behind the paywall leaving us with old fashioned algorithm search (hurrah).

The madness of technology development continues.

"How quickly can I replace it when Google decides to shut it down?"

Google+ was a rather harsh lesson in that regard.
