And....I literally killed my instance by just attempting to turn it off and back on again. :kek:

Linux is fun when you don't really know what you're doing, ain't it? LMAO.

If anyone knows anything, here's what I wanted to do and what I did and what happened.

I'm running Sharkey without docker and I wanted to shut the instance down to allocate more resources to the VPS so I did these commands:

sudo systemctl disable sharkey
sudo systemctl stop sharkey
poweroff

then when I was done allocating, I powered it back on and ran these commands.

sudo systemctl enable sharkey
sudo systemctl restart sharkey

Now there's a 502 nginx error on the site.

If anyone knows anything about what I did wrong or what I can do to fix it, I'd appreciate it.

My Linux peoples that helped me get the instance started are away right now but should be back in a few hours hopefully😬

Edit: Honestly, I've gotten some advice from you kind folks and I think it might be over my head. I'm gonna step away from the PC for a bit and recollect my thoughts and I might try some stuff when I come back.

@Jerry Yeah, it's strange. There doesn't seem to be much wrong in the logs. I got a small error when trying to shut it down, but I don't think that caused it🤷‍♂️

I'm at a complete loss for ideas at this point. Status on both NGINX and Sharkey seems "okay". I DID have some "warns" with Sharkey starting up which I'll also paste here, but I had 2 of those errors when I started it up originally and it was working fine and it's just the same errors doubled, and they say "ignored".

First pic is the end of the Sharkey logs, where I "restarted" the instance and the second pic is the Sharkey status when I use the command.

Well well....I'm PLEASANTLY surprised by Oliphant pulling his advocation for .art being involved in his blocklists and no longer even hosting ANY Tier besides Tier 0 or the "DNI" list!

That means I'm no longer on "Oliphant's Tier 3 blocklist" for lies by .art...because it no longer exists!

The account is pretty inactive and seems like a MASSIVE missed opportunity to advocate and educate users there...😬

It really sucks that someone grabbed the username, uploaded the icon and has only used it a handful of times...

It doesn't even have Fediverse enabled.😔

PLEASE boost for reach if you care about informing people about the Fediverse and would like to see that account put to better use!

@dave I think I'm still seeing being in "perpetual almost following mode" with PodcastIndex accounts I try to follow. Continually seem to be in the requested mode, but not following yet.

Happy to be a beta tester on that bug.

@tchambers @dave it's mastodon proprietary. So that's my theory on where the problem lies, unless Dave has thought about this and integrated that into his service.🤷‍♂️

To be more clear, I get tons of failed jobs a day with authorization errors, this has to be because of authorized fetch because it wasn't happening beforehand and I suspect something similar might be going on here.

If you aren't aware, the BlueSky-Fediverse bridge known as BridgyFed is live now.

Back when it was announced, there was a small window of time when it was added to the Oliphant's Tier 0 blocklist.

If you are using this blocklist and WANT to be federated with BlueSky, please double check to make sure you don't have the version of the list that it appears on. You may have blocked the bridge and not even know it.

The domain you want to look for is: brid.gy

Okay, so something that been living rent-free in my head today: a woman I know is distraught because she’s 37-years-old and doesn’t think she’ll find a man with small toes.

And small toes are a dealbreaker for her.

But for the life of me… aren’t all toes small? I really am empathetic towards her. I just don’t understand how small a small toe is.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this ideal man has to have big feet and small toes. Size 12 and higher. But this big footed man must have small toes.

@atomicpoet that's a VERY specific requirement. Unfortunately, I don't think it's common at all to have size 12+ with small toes. I feel that our bodies are good enough most of the time to have those things be proportionate.😬

It's such an exciting time for social media.

Fediverse is going near-mainstream due to wide adoption.

Bluesky now "unofficially" federates with the fantastic work of Ryan Barrett's BridgyFed!

Threads has one-way federation and claims to plan to fully federate soon enough.

Flipboard is actively working on Federation, some parts already working!

Nostr is federated using the Momostr Pink bridge which also bridges Threads.

The future of interconnected social media is now. Exciting times, we are in!😁

FediTip of the day:

If you're new, you might want to post an post littered with hashtags that are related to your interests.

A lot of people browse that hashtag to find new users and help them along.

A lot of instances don't allow full text search, therefore hashtags are their only way of seeing your posts.

If your profile and posts are set to "public" and you can read this very post, you should have no sense of "privacy" here on Fedi. That means ANYONE can reply.

There's 20,000+ instances and new ones every day, there's NO WAY to tell who is accessing your posts or what they're doing with them.

Fediverse is not some kinda "bastion for privacy" nor is there any sort of "consent" required to see your posts if they are public.

The only way you can be 100% sure that your followers are the only ones that directly see your posts is to make your profile and posts private. Even then, screenshots exist.

Remember, you're on the internet. Once you post it, it's probably not going away. This is true everywhere.

If there were ever a single post that truly shows how running a Fedi instance is, that I could boost to the moon, it's this one.

People still somehow think that Fedi is "opt-in" or "privacy focused" or even "community focused". None of these things are true and I wish more people understood.

It's not a BAD thing, per se. I like it, personally. I choose who I want to interact with by blocking those instances I DON'T want to interact with, but it's OPEN BY DEFAULT is something some people can't grasp.😬

Hey, got a related question!

We finally got accepted as a Publisher (yay!), and we have a LOT of articles that fall into different categories. Our site is able to generate all kinds of RSS feeds, and we have special topic hubs set up in a number of different ways.

Is it better to just have one magazine for the whole site, or should we split off into different magazines - one for the Fediverse, one for Bluesky, one for our Podcast, etc?

Just want to follow best practices here. Maybe @mike has an opinion? 😁

I like that bigger platforms like Flipboard are starting to federate. Though, with a supposed 150m+ accounts, its kinda strange that I don't get much boosted to my timeline....

OK this from @steven is one of my new favorite Fedi apps that I've seen in a bit.

It opens almost every major podcast into the Fedi, making federated podcasts at scale a usable thing. Incredible to see it in the wild even in beta.

Huge credit to Steven for this app & to the team at PodcastIndex for the AP bridge that undergirds it. Early days but hugely impressive.

I said it elsewhere, but I say it here too, I HATE how corporate social media sites have taken SOCIAL out of social media.

Thankfully the Fediverse is mostly taking that back. But if we don't expand to get those that are still on corporate social media to move here, then we'll just become the echo chambers we hate. That's why the Threads integration is a good thing. We need to expand.

The side effect of video games is technology preservation.

Few people—if any—keep their Commodore 64 around for word processing. Don’t get me wrong, I have a soft spot for Easy Writer. But that’s not why the C64 is remembered.

No, if you still have a C64 around, it’s probably used for Turrican or Lode Runner or Paperboy. And if not those games, some other games.

This is why, if you want tech to stay around, make it appeal to gamers.

@atomicpoet That's great! But let's note that these are most of the time indie/lower budget type games. And yes I know who owns the site and what games they've put out, but I feel like they are the biggest development studio there, no? 🤔Also relevant is how old the games are. Cause I'm speaking in terms of the latest generation and in the eyes of a casual gamer with an Xbox or playstation. Lots of those mainstream AAA and AA games are always online. Though, you are right, there are MANY offline games on PC, I just feel like they're getting less and less coverage nowadays.

PSA: Since Threads apparently will be federating replies soon, I thought I should post this again, because there's still a lot of people that don't know.

When a normal user uses "block this domain" it's LITERALLY just a MUTE. The blocked server can still see, interact, and reply to your posts, you just won't be able to see them.

It's kinda like sitting in a room with hungry bears while wearing a blindfold. If you're scared of hungry bears, your best bet is to get out of the room, not put a blindfold on. And by this, I simply mean to migrate to an instance where the blocks are up to your standard on the "instance" level.

Stay informed and make informed decisions, no matter what you choose to do with your Fediverse presence.

@marta Thanks for that info! This makes sense.

Personally, I have chosen to "wait and see" about Threads, but I've always been hesitant about Authorized Fetch because I wasn't 100% sure if it was actuallly an ActivityPub feature or just something Mastodon added in, like their proposed Quote Post integration that won't work with other AP softwares. Therefore I've left it off, in fear of unintentionally blocking out 40% of Fedi (Mastodon is like 60-70% of Fediverse instances)

@wedistributemedia Good to see @hello continue to be an amazing advocate for the Fediverse across the internet. We need organizations and people like this that aren't afraid to branch out to other platforms with the goal of spreading the Fediverse around.

This is so new and alien to so many people. If we don't have advocates like this, people will always go "What the heckarino is the Fediverse?!? I don't want the government running my social media!!" 🤦‍♂️

So far, I'm not liking how Threads posts render on my Akkoma server.

Too much of it is no text -- just a big ginormous paperclip.

And what is that paperclip? Well, when I click on it, it opens up a new tab to reveal... a screenshot of a Tweet.

All of this could be bloody avoided if Threads people put the contents of the tweet in their posts. Or even better, if Threads actually rendered these pictures in the post and put in alt-text as well.

I'd tell these Threads people how bad these posts look on the Fediverse, but none of them can see my replies. Thanks, @zuck!

(Also, if the link to the post doesn't show up, don't blame me. Blame Threads. You don't need to click it anyway since I'm providing a screenshot of what I'm seeing.)

Just came across a very interesting thread about vocabulary in which I learned a new meaning for the 1st choice ⬇️ , in brackets.

So, I’m curious now @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd and others that I’m not aware about, how do you identify yourself?

I’m talking about personal preference, not how others could identify you. For example, I don’t like being included in one of choices below, because for me it’s a word that minimizes and dismisses my reality.

@pathfinder @adelinej @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I see that as the difference between neurodiverse and Neurodivergent. Divergent is a difference from the "norm". So it's more of a "category" of individuals who have neurology differences that diverge from the norm.
