Post News was one of many alternatives that emerged in 2022 during the implosion of the Twitter platform. Seemingly loved by journalists, but limited by a ridiculous invite-only launch strategy and the creation of bogus accounts intended to lure publishers to the platform, it always remained very niche. And now it's dead. https://post.news/@/noam/2fJw4PYRFjya343RpiToiyEQr0x

@tannerman Maybe they could pull a and try to start a Mastodon instance? @gabor and the rest of the pebble.social community might able to offer some advice. I think there have been some attempts to create a verified journalist news space here and so maybe Post might have some cachet to make it happen. Or, the journalists will all head to - LOL

This is the new look of https://pebble.social based on the mainline software.

It gives the instance it's amidst the countless instances powered by mainline Mastodon.

The theme ported to mainline Mastodon's default UI by @blobcat and is available here https://github.com/blobcatz/pebble-mastodon-theme if other instances wants to install it.

If you haven't been paying attention, It has been only barely 3 days since closed its doors and many are moving to the and settling in over at https://pebble.social.

However, prior to that, when the announcement of the shutdown was first made, the first thing that happened was the creation and marketing of the hashtag . The purpose of the hashtag was to make it easier to discover content from former users, regardless of where in the fediverse you are located.

A few days later, the @t2pub was born. It is a fediverse . Anyone who is following the group is guaranteed to receive the latest T2pub group content shared by other users. As compared to the hashtag, it relies heavily on if the user was already discovered by an account's local instance.

Finally, pebble.social was born; and former Pebble users who migrated earlier to the Fediverse are moving to it.

Now, this is interesting because there is now a growing sub-community within the Fediverse network. Former users who primarily wish to interact with fellow former users; while, at the same time, keeping the lines open for interaction with the wider fediverse.

If we look at it from a or or perspective, if different star systems (for example Sol System) are the software, and the different planets (for example Planet Mars) are the instances; we've just witnessed migrants from the “Pebble Universe” after it collapsed.

These migrants found a planet of their own and called is Pebble.Social which is located in the Mastodon star system.

And those who landed on other planets are relocating to the Pebble.social Planet; however, as they are still settling in this new world and new universe, they are still primarily concerned on their own planet. Building it up. Setting up their communities.

Do we have to keep adding when we are on pebble.social?

youronlyone ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@Jiriki Hashtags and group tags are optional.

However, in the , hashtags are the best way to be discovered by people who are (1) not following you; and (2) not watching their “Federated timeline” feed.

While group tags (like chirp.social and a.gup.pe groups) is more of a filtered discovery tool, wherein only those following the group will see your posts.

However, if the other users are using the custom frontend phanpy.social then they can see the “Local timeline” of pebble.social. Or, if the other users are using or and have set it up to monitor 's “Local timeline” then they'll see your posts regardless.

But most people are using the mainline Mastodon software, which lacks the feature to see “Local timelines” of other instances; so on other instances won't see your content unless someone they are already following re-shared / boosted your post.

If you want to keep track of posts related to the hashtags T2pub, T2, T2social, Pebble and PebbleIs you can do the following.

Steps for software / instances:

1: Search for the hashtag

2: Click the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the hashtag page

3: Click the +Pin link

4: Click the hamburger menu again in the newly created column

5: Click the option “Include additional tags for this column”

6: Under the “Any of these” field, add , , , and (that is “pebbleis” not “pebbleLs”).

7: Click the hamburger menu to close it.

From that moment on, any posts your instance receives with those hashtags will appear in that column.

You can also follow @feditips for more tips.

Or ask over at .

Of course, don't forget to introduce yourselves and tag it with and hashtag your topic of interests. It's all about hashtags in the fediverse network.

One last thing, do check out over at https://fediverse.info/explore/people You can find more people to follow by searching the database by hashtag topic. You can also list yourself there (the instructions on the site will guide you). See, for example: https://fediverse.info/explore/people?t=T2pub

> That illustrate my main feeling on Mastodon : so many instances, I'm missing so much from all those places I will never see. And I don't have time to duplicate myself like you do, it's already too much with T2-Bluesky-Mastodon 😬

It's a good question.

At first, it appears that one is missing a lot because there are different instances or servers. However, if we consider it from the + + + + + + + era/setup, it is actually the same thing.

  1. Even on these non-federated platforms, for example Twitter / #X, you actually miss a lot too. Or from Facebook, you actually see only those that Facebook's algorithms want you to see (you don't even see everything from your 1st Level connections [i.e. those you added as friends and those you chose to follow are also filtered by their algorithm]).

  2. If you want to follow someone using Instagram but doesn't have a presence on Twitter, you will be forced to create an Instagram account.

Or, they have a Twitter account, but they are not updating it because they chose to make Instagram their main presence.

This is where the has an advantage: you don't have to create a account to follow someone who prefers to share images and photos.

Or if you want to follow a blog, you don't have to create a account, if they added the / Fediverse add-on, you can follow them from your own fediverse account.

In the old way, you have to create an account for each platform. However, in the Fediverse way, you don't have to.

I have a Pixelfed and account, to mention a few, for my images and needs. If you like to follow images I upload and/or books I've read, you can follow me at @youronlyone and @youronlyone using your existing @Helene fediverse account.

You don't have to create accounts there, like how you would for Instagram and Goodreads.

People like me, who have multiple accounts in the fediverse network, are advance users and who have specific needs and reasons.

It is like having multiple emails: I have a separate email per service/platform. I have a separate email per games.

Thinking about the engineer who said they believe interoperability with the social web would just be a cost center and wouldn’t bring any profits. The point is not how interoperability affects the bottom line, the point is that it allows your platform to survive in an ever changing social media landscape and have a bottom line at all. If was part of the social web, they would have had a network of 1.8M active users, not 1,000, and perhaps wouldn’t have had to shut down.

@Gargron I'm really sorry to see go. They had a lot of really good ideas, and not enough people to get critical mass. They should just move the domain and user accounts to a Mastodon server and let the community figure out next steps.

The news about (former T2) shutting down makes me think that if we want a new market, we need to recalibrate what targets we want to hit. Is it user volume solely? Do for-profit social media make sense anymore? At least we're now seeing clearly that network effects are just as hard to break as human habits built in time. Also, it may be about time to stop looking for a replica of TW -> https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/24/pebble-the-twitter-alternative-previously-known-as-t2-is-closing-down/
