Enjoying this thread where they pontificate about how online video needs competition, but it costs too much to do it.

I've been running tilvids.com for almost four years now on mostly community donations. The problem isn't the cost, it's the fact that every creator thinks they're the next Mr. Beast and just one video away from being a millionaire, and viewers are complacent.

We could all easily collectively decide to change this at any time.

@mamus Some PeerTube creators do have a donate button! That said, the donate button doesn't directly donate, it takes you to the page of their choice, so not necessarily frictionless.

If you care about an open Internet, contact the creators you enjoy watching and encourage them to move to decentralized platforms like PeerTube. I can promise you, it only gets worse from here with

If wants to figure out monetization, they should explore the social space with One of the biggest challenges for individual instances to deal with is how to help their creators monetize vs. but Mozilla is large enough that they could start building those connections with companies looking to promote their products.

But sure, go ahead and chase the bandwagon with no monetization plan other than "AI is popular, let's do that."

That's fine, but there are already orgs working on that. Mozilla doesn't need to be just the next one. We need them to focus on other areas they are better-served to win in.

A near billionaire content creator being courted by a likely eventual trillionaire eccentric to leave a multi-trillion-dollar platform for their own is everything wrong with the Internet circa 2024.

Can we all just agree to start over?

People can be as upset about this as they want, but so long as they continue to watch they continue tacitly supporting their user-hostile actions. If you really want to make a difference, stop watching, and tell content creators why. When you can convince them to move to platforms that don't shove ads down your throat every 3 minutes, THAT is when you'll see change their tune.

@RobHadley

Absolutely, and I'd never suggest otherwise! The problem is, we've collectively decided to pay for content on the Internet with our attention, which has led to any number of problems, while at the same time enriching a very small number of companies (and an even smaller number of billionaires at the top).

I tried to roll it out the other night, but had to back out because of a problem with the yunohost script. Currently waiting for a resolution to be identified.

Oddly enough, the update went just fine on our redundant mirror instance...

According to FreeWillie.net, transition into the public domain exactly 7 days from now. That's much longer than it should have taken, but at least it starts a big snowball.

Copyright law needs to be fundamentally re-written to support creators, not corporations.

https://www.freewillie.net

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@mlanger @feoh

Clawing back copyright law to a shorter period would inherently benefit creators, because they could make derivative works much earlier on. So regardless of individual or corporation, limiting copyright to a period of something reasonable like 30-40 years would give creators a long enough protection to benefit, without having copyright law serve to enrich corporations.

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@mlanger @feoh

I do create content sometimes, but generally have opted not to monetize my creations. How about you?

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@mlanger @feoh

That's my original point though. Copyright law, in its current form, is not doing much to benefit you as an individual creator. There's no good societal reason for creative works to be protected for a century; the only ones that benefit in that scenario are corporations. Allowing temporary monopolies over creative works for 20, 30, even 40 years is beneficial to creators, but at some point that benefit flips to stifling new creation at the benefit of large corporations.

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@epicEaston197

Nope. January 1st, 2024. It's a big day for copyright!

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@mlanger @feoh

The intention of copyright was not to pass on generational wealth, but rather to give creators a temporary monopoly over their works, long enough to capitalize on them for a period of time, but not so long that they can't transition into the public domain where other creators can utilize them in new works. I would definitely say it's more important for works to pass into the public domain than to pass down as generational wealth.

tilvids ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@joojmachine @Joseph_of_Earth

Point of clarification: We will federate with others, but only if they strictly align with our goal of quality edutainment. @vkc is the first example, great content edutainment content creator that started on but was then ready to start their own instance. We were happy to federate and have their content show up on our instance.

What we DON'T do is blanket federate with everyone for, as you stated, good reason. Too many bad-faith "creators" out there.

Dear @tilvids , how can I as a content creator on Tilvids.com apply for a higher quotum for videos on my channel? I'm not receiving a reply on Matrix so that's why I'm contacting you here. In public, so that the question and the answer are findable for others with the same question :P

tilvids ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

Hey @erikkemp good question. Keep in mind that our moderators are all volunteers with other primary commitments, so they get to questions/requests when they can.

The route you took is the right one (Matrix) because I don't want to be the only arbiter of who can contribute content. Additionally, we can only grow as quickly as donations come in, so that's the limit on additional space.

I'll take a look at your account and see if we can give you a bit more though. Thanks for the good question.

tilvids OP ,
@tilvids@mstdn.social avatar

@ArtBrew @mozilla

Sure, but there's not a lot you can realistically do about that at the moment. At least by switching to Firefox, you're feeding the beast less. Also (at least for now) Android doesn't directly generate much revenue for Google. It collects data about the user that they DO use to monetize, but only if you're using the services that Google can monetize around.

🤞 for a legit option for mobile in the future.
