173: Battle Chess (1988)

Channeling Monty Python and that holo-chess scene from Star Wars, this chess effort had pieces perform animated scraps whenever a piece was taken. It was fun – at first – to see how a rock-monster rook would duff up a bishop. But when the animations were done, this was a quite ordinary chess game. And ‘chess’ + battles had already been done better years earlier by Archon.

Next up, some tech!

I had no idea that there was a linux release built for the M-chip. It looks interesting. I couldn't run it full time because my work needs all of the Apple services, but it might be fun to play with.

Obsidian is one of my precious software Finds of the last year. As a fan of Markdown it's just amazing and has revolutionised my note-taking. That, plus there are dozens of wider features I haven't even touched on yet! :celsilvercrystalheart: Heartily recommended.

I’m daily amazed by just how bad the User Experience (UX) is for Apple’s feature, as a parent or guardian. The whole process of synchronizing Downtime and App Limits across devices for multiple family members is incredibly broken.

I don’t know how they built it, but it acts like every device is broadcasting its current knowledge of limits to every other device. And whichever device broadcasts last, “wins”. And if the device that broadcasts last is out of date? It just overwrites everything newer, whatever limits you just changed.

CBI Image of the Day. It is 1984 & the Apple MacIntosh quickly stood out for its relative, small form factor, GUI, and ease of use--garnering substantial adoption in businesses, like this NYC office, schools, and homes.

The cityscape and office setting stand in contrast to the computer lib myth (more than a little irony to revolution myths presented in ultra-expensive Superbowl ads)

whyyyyyy is moving files on a Mac so harddddd

It's not ridiculous that I have files that I want to move from one folder to another folder - not copy. Move.

Never understood why 'move to folder' is not a drop-down option

It's such a basic freaking function

The whole three finger drag requires me to arrange all of my windows so that I can drag stuff to a place without folders unless it gets lost in that folder that I'm dragging it past

Click and drag on a trackpad equals me opening up whatever I'm trying to move

I spent soooooooo much time griping about basic functionality in windows products

If you got a better technique toss it at me

    No Man's Sky for Mac.
Now I've been playing No Man's Sky for the Mac for a few hours and I think this game could keep me hooked for longer. The exploration side of the game is very strong and I like that. Every now and then you run into a few dudes like this one. I think as long as you don't provoke him, he leaves you alone.

Pet peeve: The phrase "Mac or PC".

    1. It implies that a Mac isn't a PC, which it absolutely is.

    2. It usually assumes that everything that isn't running a Mac OS is running Windows, which isn't true.

It is mostly annoying when we're talking about software/hardware/firmware compatibility, because when you're not using MacOS or Windows, it's often difficult to find out if you can use whatever the product is.

(Tech journalists really love this misclassification)

It’s only a matter of time until sales start to drop. You can’t have infinite growth.

That said, my 16” M1 Pro Macbook Pro from 2021 and base Mac Studio is holding up well for what I use them for, I probably don’t need an upgrade for a long while. The 2018 Macbook Pro 15” was already pretty slow after three years and had the Butterfly Keyboard that was a ticking time bomb.
