FOSS - ensuring even new hardware stays in use when vendor-support eventually ends!
Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new #Mac will eventually lose #Apple support. Thanks to the impressive work of #Asahi#Linux project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.
On top of the great work that @AsahiLinux and the Fedora Asahi SIG do, they've also worked to line up releases with the rest of Fedora, so thank you for that!
This release brings:
OpenGL 4.6
High quality audio out of the box
Plasma, Gnome, Server, and Minimal variants available
@itsfoss#Onionshare is GREAT! Not fast, but secure and protects privacy very good! Also supports ANY important platforms like #LINUX#ANDROID#IOS#MAC CR#APPLE :underheart:
I have been building browsers for 30 years now. First Opera and now Vivaldi. My estimate is that more than 1 billion have used one of my browsers or both. Have you?
@nixCraft I'm surprised how big of a difference there is between personal desktop and gaming, I wonder how it looks compared to #Windows or #Mac stats?
@thurrott A masterclass review Paul! I still have a primary #windows11 PC, but I love my M1 #MacBook Pro. As you mentioned, the integration with the rest of the #Apple ecosystem is a delightful part of owning a #Mac. When Apple hits M5 I plan to replace my Windows laptop with either a Mini or Studio. There just isn't anything sticky in Windows for me anymore.
This month it is 30 years since I started working on browsers. April 1994 is when Geir and I started working on the Opera browser. We founded the company a year later.
Initially I made the UI, while Geir did a lot of the core.
Since that time I have dedicated myself to making the Web live up to its potential. First at Opera and now at Vivaldi.
If you ever used Opera and you have not tried Vivaldi, I invite you to give us a try!
If you never used Opera or Vivaldi, you are invited as well!
ARGH! I'm in the market for a new desktop (my W11 PC is getting old). Even though I've used #Mac, #Win, and various #Linux distros, I'm feeling pulled to get a Mac Studio.
I know, I know.
It's just that all of the well designed utilities are on the Mac. I'm NOT a fan of Apple, but Apple Devs just do a great job. I've rarely looked for a utility and found something better on W11 or Linux (they are usually worse)
I wish Linux utilities were just a bit more polished...
Fortinet has revealed vulnerabilities in its FortiOS, FortiProxy, FortiClient Linux, and FortiClient Mac products, including a critical one that could allow remote code execution. This critical flaw, identified as CVE-2023-45590, has a high severity score and could enable an attacker to execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into visiting a malicious website. Other high-severity issues affect FortiOS and FortiProxy, where credentials are not adequately protected. A specific flaw (CVE-2023-41677) might allow an attacker to steal the administrator cookie under certain conditions. Additionally, FortiClientMac has vulnerabilities due to a lack of configuration file validation. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an advisory warning about the potential for cyber threat actors to exploit these vulnerabilities.
I can't get a Mac Mini 2018 to go into recovery mode. Apparently I'm not alone; there are quite a few web pages about it.
One web page claims to offer six ways to fix it. Number 1 is to try again. Number 6 is to reinstall MacOS by first booting into recovery mode. 2 through 5 aren't very helpful either. #mac#macmini#macos
A Windows user, a Mac user, and a Linux user walk into a bar.
➡️ The #Windows user orders a beer and gets into a fight over how bloated the selection is.
➡️ The #Mac user orders the most expensive single-origin craft cocktail and smugly admires its minimalist design.
➡️ The #Linux user installs a whole brewery in the corner and declares free drinks for everyone, but then spends the rest of the night explaining why their homemade brew is objectively superior.
Suddenly the linux brewer admits that one micro-ingrdient in their brew is toxic (#xz#lzma) and that it may be a remote possibility that their microbrew drinkers may be affected.
They do tests and find out that both the #windows and #mac users have also been affected, meanwhile the #android user is having a stroke!
🎉 Announcing #Macstodon v1.2, the premier Mastodon client for vintage #Macintosh computers!
This release features the all new Toot-To-Speech (TTS) technology! Select any toot, click the Speak button, and Macstodon will read the toot back to you, using whatever voice you have selected in the Speech control panel. It works with MacinTalk 2, 3, and Pro, all the way down to 68020 machines running System 7.1.
Also featured in version 1.2 is improved stability and error handling. If Macstodon runs out of memory or encounters an unexpected error, it will save a log to the application folder, show you a dialog explaining what went wrong, and exit gracefully.
Of course, all the usual features are still there including timeline/profile browsing, toot posting, and interactions!
#Linux is like a Chinese copy of an #OS with poorly written documentation and badly fitting parts. I'm trying to load #Mozilla#Thunderbird on #Linux_Mint but the instructions are gibberish. e.g. instructions say following libraries or packages are needed:
glibc 2.17 or higher
GTK+ 3.14 or higher
libdbus-glib 0.6.0 or higher
libglib 2.42 or higher
libstdc++ 4.8.1 or higher
libxtst 1.2.3 or higher
X.Org 1.0 or higher
Why isn't there a way to check if my Mint install already has them?
@thunderbird@normplum Thanks. I'm an engineer by training and English was not my first language so I tend to think in analogies. It would be helpful to have an overview of how #Linux & #Thunderbird are similar/different from #Win/#Mac. Also, I'm very cautious about what I d/l and install on my desktop. It would be useful to know what sources can be trusted. Let me think more about this.
Bought a new laptop. Asus, good machine. Comes with #Windows 11 and... ads?!?!? Since when do we sell stuff and add bloat to it that has -10 extra value to the user?
I still pray software devs start making all their software available on Linux, so I can ditch that #Microsoft shite.
No, I won't buy a #Mac only to have my software not working any more when my OS updates.
#Boost willkommen! #mac#videoverwaltung
An online space adventure by Spellbook available in #Linux, #Windows, #Android, #iOS, and #Mac (and #Steam); that is simple yet fun. Play with hundreds of players!

Liebe Schwarmintelligenz.
I remember when #Chrome was introduced as a fast, efficient browser. Just look at this screenshot from the Activity Monitor on my #Mac. #Safari is the browser I actually use. Chrome sits in the background for one specific use case. No plugins. Just idling, sucking 4 times the energy out of my machine compared to Safari … I repeat this over and over: If you own a Mac, use Safari. Use Chrome only if you have to. Close it after using.
Github vs. Email Aliases
