Whenever I’m at a Korean restaurant, they have K-pop playing on multiple TV screens.

And I get exhausted just looking at these music videos. Is there K-pop out there where the girls just chill out and relax?

There is a Korean area near Lougheed Mall.

There are a lot of Korean stores and restaurants in the area.

Many don't play k-pop on their TVs. Many don't even have TVs.

(I was there, again, yesterday — on Saturday.)

“Asian eyes”, also known as epicanthic eye-folds, are not entirely Asian. They actually occur amongst human populations all over the world.

People of European and African descent often have them. Mind you, they don’t occur as often as in Asians but they’re not rare either.

Well known celebrities of European descent that have epicanthic eye-folds include Bjork, Jennifer Lawrence, and Renee Zellweger (before she had plastic surgery to remove them).

I was actually telling my wife, who is Asian, that I find that physical trait highly attractive. She found that surprising since so many folks in Asian nations get plastic surgery to get rid of them.

Anyway, she better not get rid of her great eyes. 😅

Those worried Threads might scrape the Fedi for AI training data should rest assured that EVERY bit of the public Fedi is ALREADY being scraped and used by all the AI players. Because it is free and public, compared to this:

"Rates vary by buyer and content type, but Braga said companies are generally willing to pay $1 to $2 per image, $2 to $4 per short-form video and $100 to $300 per hour of longer films. The market rate for text is $0.001 per word."

So far, only 2,800 Threads accounts have turned on Federation. Of the ones I see, they’re quite active.

I suspect the reason for the minuscule federated accounts is because Threads users can’t see replies from the Fediverse yet. Why would you turn on federation if you’re oblivious to interactions from the Fediverse?

Nevertheless, we’ll see what happens once communication becomes two-way.

I was curious how a Threads account shows up on the Fediverse.

I have seen Threads users on the Fediverse — but I noticed that when I tried looking up many people, they didn't show up.

Later, I saw mention of Threads users having to enable Fediverse.

This is how a Threads user turns on "Fediverse sharing" on their Threads account.

How is the Fedi NOT going to end up like email is today (ie, Gmail, outlook, employers and fringes)?

Not sure I’ve seen anyone talk about this much? With the spam incidents, talk of allow-list federation modes and the seemingly natural tendency for big instances (ATM, ~30% all MAU), and you know, threads/meta joining … it seems like an unsurprising outcome especially should the user base increase.

Single user instances already seem painful enough to not be worth it for even many who can.

For better or worse, the Mastodon client-server API is the (de facto) standard client-server API for the Fediverse.

If you are building a Fediverse server — implementing the Mastodon client-server API instantly makes all sorts of Fediverse client software work with your server.

If you are building a Fediverse client — using the Mastodon client-server API instantly makes your client work with most Fediverse servers — even ones that aren't Mastodon.

There are people who worry about information, history, and culture being lost.

They want to preserve it — preserve it for themselves and future generations.

They try to save it — save files, save books, save articles, save photos, ... save anything they feel is important.

These people are called archivists.

In some ways, ActivityPub & the Fediverse matches an archivist's dream —

Done right, ActivityPub & the Fediverse can make saving information, history, and culture easier.

How‽ — Boosting something is saving it, because a copy of what you boosted is stored on your server.

And if you are on your own server — you are saving it to your own (server) computer.

ATOMICPOET: "[some] people believe their posts [on the Fediverse] aren't discoverable because when you do a search for them on Mastodon you can't find them." "But — here's the problem. Google still indexes those posts. And people really only discover that — really after the fact, right? The Fediverse exists It exists because — well, federation means you're copying stuff from one server to another server, right?" "And if you've opted to — there's different levels of visibility on the Fediverse, right? So there's obviously "direct", in which you send a message and only one person — the person you tag — actually only the people you tag see those messages. Those are, those are direct visibility. The next one is "followers only" — So only people who follow you can see your posts, right?Okay. And then there is "unlisted" where you don't have to be a follower to see a post, but it does not show up in public timelines. Okay. " Now, so far so good — the final rung of visibility is "public", right? I've had a lot of people send public posts on the Fediverse and they believe that they're not being indexed. There are a lot of different types in the ActivityStreams Vocabulary.

https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/

But because Mastodon only supports 8 of them (with only 2 of them being supported properly), there is "pressure" on other Fediverse software to restrict themselves to these 8.

Because they want to be compatible with Mastodon.

I think it would be better if there was a way to boost an entire thread, rather than boosting the individual posts in a thread.

That would mean that the thread needs to be a type of object (within ActivityPub, or some other protocol).

And additional posts to a thread need to be seen as an update or some other event (to the thread).

I started working with SQLite recently —

(SQLite is one of the databases that PostFreely supports. This support was inherited from WF)

So far I like SQLite

There is no database-server. And the database seems to just be a single file

(Might make for easy backups)

There is even a command-line tool, that lets you inspect and work with a SQLite data file

I am assuming that SQLite has a much lower "footprint" than MySQL, Postgres, and others

By default Kbin doesn't turn on captchas for new user account registrations.

Kbin and Lemmy servers have had problems with bots creating accounts.

Having captchas off by default seems risky to me. And a potential headache for a new Kbin sysop who is still getting familiar with Kbin.

To create a better experience for Kbin sysops, is going to turn on captchas by default for Kbin servers.

Following someone on the Fediverse is broken — the user-experience (UX) is not good.

Especially if the person you want to follow is on a server different from yours.

Sure it technically works, BUT in practice it is broken —

I have done user testing with people who have used other social-media, but who have never used the Fediverse

Virtually all of them fail at following someone on a remote server
