So, a half-Filipino half-Nigerian was offended by something written in the Filipino language and called the staff and restaurant as “racist” against Black people.

https://balita.net.ph/2024/05/09/viral-racist-na-note-sa-resibo-ng-customer-umani-ng-reaksiyon/

Let's analyse the note:

> Sa nakablack na nakaupo sa 14 kulot ang buhok kamukha ni black jack.

It literally translates as: The one in black sitting on 14 curly hair look alike of black jack.

Proper English translation: The one wearing black, on table 14, with curly hair, who is a look alike of Blakdyak.

This is the customer's rant on social media:

> This behavior was exhibited by one of their staff members, who took it upon herself to make remarks about my appearance based on my racial background. As an individual of Nigerian and Filipino descent, I know I’m different. But was the note necessary?

Read the English translation again and answer these questions:

  1. Was there a remark about his appearance?

  2. How about if we add, “based on my racial background”?

  3. Was it possible that the staff knew he is half-Nigerian and half-Filipino that the customer has to mention it and how he knows he is different?

  4. Maybe what he was actually offended about was being compared to Blakdyak (in note as “black jack”)?

> Blakdyak was a Filipino actor, comedian and reggae singer. He was known as ‘The King of Pinoy Reggae’.

see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blakdyak

So, very obviously, it was a complement.

A question to you, dear reader:
a. Would you be offended if what you're wearing was described?
b. Would you be offended if your hair was described?
c. Would you be offended if you were described as a look a like of a celebrity? (Granted, that celebrity is/was not an a*hole.)

Including the customer's description is not needed especially if they have a table number system any way. However, we do not know what concept the restaurant have.

I, myself, have been to some restaurants which describes their customers.

In one restaurant, they don't have a table number system. It is also their concept to share tables with others. The best way to avoid confusion was to describe the customer.

They don't take names for privacy reasons. Not even nicknames. (A customer can later argue it is not their name. And if a staff gave the nickname, there's a chance of offense or similarly, argue it is not their name.)

In another restaurant, there was an addition, I was compared to some celebrity (I don't recall). My date and I had a fit of laughter after reading it.

Here's an example of one such description about me:

Filipino: 'Yung nakaitim na short black hair.

“'Yung nakaitim” = Wearing [something] black.

In English: The one in black with short black hair.

If it was written in Filipino as: “Yung maitim”, then it can be construed as racist. The word “maitim” in this context is referring to a person's skin color or dark tone.

So, going back to the original issue.

> Sa nakablack na nakaupo sa 14 kulot ang buhok kamukha ni black jack.

EN: The person in black sitting on [table] 14 with curly hair…

If it was written this way:
> Sa maitim na nakaupo sa 14 kulot ang buhok kamukha ni black jack.

EN: The black person…

Or, worse:
> Sa nakablack na kulay kanal na nakaupo sa 14 kulot ang buhok hindi ata nagsuklay kamukha ni black jack.

EN: The person in black, as black as a canal sitting on [table] 14 with curly hair that wasn't brushed…

See the huge difference?

The original note in Filipino:

  1. never mentioned nor implied anything about the customer's skin color.

  2. has nothing to do with the customer being a black person.

  3. Even impossible that the note was referring to him being half-Nigerian and half-Filipino.

  4. The Black Jack (Blakdyak) “remark” was a complement.

Now this foreigner, we're assuming he is a foreigner because he obviously misunderstood Tagalog and he missed the context, is doing everything to sue the restaurant and the staff.

youronlyone OP ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

I'm sorry man. It is very clear that you misunderstood the note, and took offense when there was nothing to be offended about.

I pity that restaurant and staff.

This case is no different from foreigners, in particular those from the USA, who saw in the and were offended.

  • Some of them uploaded videos calling Filipinos racists.
  • Some of them also had the audacity to “educate” Filipinos.

What's wrong? Missed context… again.

KKK was a revolutionary group that fought against Western invaders, in particular, Spaniards. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the American KKK.

Or, that incident wherein a group tweeted, “Hello Negros!” And every Western person on Twitter called them “racist” and “educated” them.

Guess what? Missed context yet again!

That P-pop group landed on Negros island, so obviously they tweeted, “Hello Negros!”

When you are from mainland US, and you land in Hawaii, do you say, “Hello Japan!”? ROFLOL.

Only a ‘fraction’ (guesstimate) of “educators” apologised to them. There were even those who defended themselves by suggesting to rename Negros island because Negros is offensive to the people of Negros. Like, uh, they're foreigners who never visited Negros, not even the Philippines, and they knew the people of Negros were offended? Puh-lease.

Anyway. This new case? It's very similar.

  1. Missed context.
  2. Misunderstood language.
  3. And a foreigner trying to “educate” a native he clearly misunderstood.

@JeremyMallin I did back in my early teens. I've forgotten about it though, it's hard if you don't have anyone to communicate with, but should be easy to have a crash course.

Also, there are different sign languages too. 😀 I learned FSL (Filipino Sign Language). While it was primarily based on ASL (American), it branched off, incorporating more local signs. Then there is KSL, which is vastly different from FSL and ASL.

The alphabet sign we use in ASL and FSL don't exist in KSL. Their sign alphabet is based on Hangeul as well, and that's just the start. 😃 I'm thinking of taking KSL in the future, once I have a good grasp of Korean language.

I started incorporating @layer {} and wow, this is very useful for theme creators, and they should start using it. Combine that with :where() for resets and normalise stylesheets, it gives a theme's styles as low specificity as possible.

This way, users who prefer to use a third-party theme can easily override as needed, instead of using:

  • !important
  • .class.class.class.class
  • :not(.\9.\9)

Another added benefit of using @layer is when you inspect it (F12), you can easily see where the CSS declaration came from, as it displays the @layer.

According to baseline:

> Since March 2022, this feature works across the latest devices and major browser versions

https://caniuse.com/css-cascade-layers

It should be fine to start using it, especially by theme authors and by reset/normalise projects.

What do you think?

The problem with the current government is that the first reaction of the President is always to wash his hands, re: accusations of China that there was an agreement with the previous administration.

He had to go through a litany of this and that just to make a point that his administration doesn't know anything about it.

You're just proving that what China is doing is effective: divide and conquer.

As the President, the best response is something like this:

“The previous administration said, and guaranteed, that there were no agreements.”

That's it. Done. Show mainland China that your administration stands united with the previous administration as far as China-Philippines disputes are concerned.

Philippine politicians need to grow up. Oh, wait, many of them are 50+ already. I guess they need to grow young, it will probably help them think clearly.

youronlyone ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@neuronakaya I'd say, just do it. Most people today forget that there are factors to consider:

  1. Culture
  2. Context
  3. Language barrier / different usage of the same words/phrases.

I see it a lot in moderation (both here in the Fediverse and in online games), a person was [often] reported by native English speakers because of this and that. But after a thorough investigation it all comes down to native English speakers failed to consider those factors I mentioned above.

For example, while Filipinos and Indians speak English, our respective English variants are not the same as the Western variants (British, Australian, American). Sure, in the case of Philippine English where it is a combination of British, Australian, and American variants, it still is different because of the many Philippine influences in it. There are as much differences as there are similarities. One such is the way the words “we”/“us” are used.

Then it becomes a question of, “should we adopt to the demands of the majority, or be true to our own?”

I say, be true to your own. It's your culture, it's how you use and understand the language, and you know the context. Anyone who wants to react negatively or brand you this and that, should be the ones to step on the breaks, not you. They need to learn to ask and clarify first, not them imposing their (often personal) standards and culture on you.

I've been planning my first solo travel/workation this year and I can't decide where to go this August. La Union, Zambales, or Baler?

La Union is at the top of my list but since it's a workation and as an introvert, I won't be into parties and large crowds. I want a more peaceful vibe. I wonder which among those three is better for digital nomading?

youronlyone Mod ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@coffeewithbren I don't know what's the situation in Baler today, but back in 2017/8, Internet connection there is slow and intermittent. You have to go outside and find the nearest cell tower to get a decent connection (but still intermittent).

That's a few years back, so it might be far better today. (Oh, back then, Globe had better coverage than Smart. Not sure now.)

However, since the heat is generally coming from the Pacific Ocean, blowing through the Philippine Sea, then inland, it is probably hotter in Aurora province. Then again, you're planning an August trip, if things get better by then, Baler will be a good option.

La Union. Last I went there was in the 90s. The last time I passed by the area was in 2019. Too crowded with establishments and tourists. It is no longer the La Union that I loved. From a friend, Internet in the area is very good and stable. Actually, the entire Ilocos Region (Region I) has a very good Internet infrastructure. It just that, if you like to stay away from crowds, it will be hard to do so unless you enter residential areas and go outside the usual tourist spots, literally go local.

Zambales. Nope. No info to share. Last time I went there was in the mid 90s.

You might want to consider Bataan, especially if you want to reconnect with nature and history. Internet's good. Though the closer you get to the mountainous areas, the more challenging it will become. Trees + mountains are not a good combination for mobile signals. Maybe they improved the infrastructure, but, quiet environment, Bataan is a good place to consider.

youronlyone Mod ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@coffeewithbren @jikodesu

Yep. I'm hoping things improved in Baler. It's a good place to live and work remotely, they don't need to urbanise, just get their Internet infrastructure better. I like how they don't have fastfood chains there, for one. (Although last time we went there, they had “Chowking coming soon” everywhere.) The locals are very friendly too!

Oh, I don't know how are things there as far as flooding. At least historically, they were devastated because of a surge. But I hope they're ready for it, and have installed measures to minimize the impact if it happens again (especially now that typhoons are getting stronger).

Otherwise, the perfect getaway in the Philippines. It's isolated yet accessible by land. So, if you need something that is not available there, it's just a bus ride away (or if you have a 4x4, adventure!). And I like the view of the Philippine Sea than the West Philippine Sea. When I'm looking over, it gives the sense of “what's out there? Just Pacific Ocean.” But if looking at WPS my mind works a lot, “from this vantage point, that's South Vietnam; over there is North Vietnam; maybe there are mainland Chinese patrol boats too”. ^_^;;

Filipinos have a thing for seeking out familiar flavors abroad. Some people crave a taste of home, a connection to their identity while living in a foreign country. It's like a little piece of the wherever they are. Others might do it out of patriotism, a way to support Filipino products even overseas.

youronlyone Mod ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@neuronakaya Yep. I often joke about it this way, “We traveled XX km just to eat at a Jollibee branch, instead of trying the local dishes.” (Using Jollibee as an example.)

=))

And then we joke about how the branch is different. Different sources, different cooks, different air, and all that, and just laugh at the silliness of it all.

I think, it also has something to do with familiarity and “playing it safe”. Like, for example, I have gout and religious considerations. While I am not picky with food, it's safer to eat familiar food, as it can give some confidence I won't accidentally trigger my gout and mess all the travel plans (and well, work, if it triggers much later).

(Some context: there might be ingredients and cooking practices that can trigger a gout. It's not easy to ask for ingredients, it also takes too much time, so a familiar food is the fastest and safest option. Also, cooking practices, like just using the same cooking utensils, pots, etc, because it adds to the flavour, but an ingredient from the previous food is bad for someone with gout, or some allergies.)

How to use or, how I think it should be:

I call this the paranoid-mode. (Good for corporations, and anyone with highly sensitive information/accounts.)

  1. One file for passwords only.

  2. One file for Passkeys.

  3. One file for TOTP.

  4. Each file is locked with (1) Password; (2) key file.
    4b. You can also add a Challenge-Response if you have a YubiKey or OnlyKey.

  5. Never use the same password and key file for each of those files.

  6. Place the TOTP and Passkeys files on separate USBs. You generally only need one, not both.

  7. For your password file:
    7a. Separate USB, useful if you have multiple USB slots.
    7b. Or, if only one slot (for example, mobile devices), you can have a separate USB for both Password + TOTP; and Password + Passkey.

This mode is good for most users. (General user mode.)

What most people actually do:

  1. One file for Passwords + TOTP + Passkeys.
  2. Password only. Or, Password + Key File.
  3. Stored in a cloud. Or, encrypted with Cryptomator before storing in the cloud. (The latter is not advisable as it might corrupt the KeePass file.)

You can combine options from paranoid-mode to the general user mode to increase security better without making it far too hard for your use case.

youronlyone OP ,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@pulsation

True. If it's all in the same file, it's like using one of those online password storage providers. Might as well stick to those.

Yeah, I think it's for convenience. It's good for information and accounts that are not sensitive, say daily accounts like social network; or games.

But if it's for accounts where we've invested a lot, say, WoW and Guild Wars 2; banks; top-performing social media accounts; and corporate information, it's safe in the long run to have them in separate files.

Another reason I can think of, because it's encrypted already; and if one is using password + key file (and the keyfile is somewhere hidden, hopefully), it will make it safe from most unauthorised access. However, if the keyfile is in the same device, or easily found, or automatically loaded… LOL, that's very bad. Might as well stop using a key file.

Hmm… yeah, you are right, definitely for convenience only. I guess, at least hide the keyfile and turn-off the autoloading of it.

CDM Entertainment also did a “highest spender” battle, and a lot of fans bought a lot to maintain their position.

As far as I can remember, this is unheard of in the Philippines. “Highest spender” style came from the J-pop culture, and it rarely works in the Philippines. They also have fans all the way to the Middle-East, Africa, and Latin America; solid ones, and they only debuted late March 2024.

    I just had a thought. I'll create a “Hall of Shame” page on my blog to list services that won't improve their service and process.

    It'll be first-hand experiences & after exhausting options… to be fair.

    Regular people can't do anything other than this.

    Hmm…

    Kate supports multi-cursor editing and custom hotkeys. Boost your productivity with the help of multi-cursor and multi-selection features. Kate now has it!

    Switching from other proprietary text editors and missing your hotkey bindings that you are accustomed to? You can configure every hotkey in Kate so you do not have to change your workflow.

    Oh! So this is how you use multi-cursor editing. I've seen this in other software but I can't imagine a scenario where I'll use it. The only thing I can imagine was using two keyboards and two people are typing at the same time, hence multiple cursors.

    @eliasp Yep! I'm going to start using it. Specially the latter part of the video, the hyphen example, it will save me time editing!

    @textovervideo Oh, yeah. That's a very good point! It's faster that way.

    So I've run this poll until yesterday. The question was whether the Fediverse has quote-posts.

    20 users voted for yes, 8 users voted for no.

    Of course, this poll wasn't representative. I dare say my "bubble" is more Fediverse-savvy than the average, and I know I had quite a number of voters from Hubzilla and (streams). So the result is greatly skewed towards "yes". And still, 40% of all voters thought the Fediverse had no quote-posts.

    This shows how well especially Mastodon users know the Fediverse.

    Oh, and by the way: The Fediverse does have quote-posts. Just about everything that isn't Mastodon can quote-post, and it all can even quote-post Mastodon toots with next to zero resistance. And in fact, quote-posts in the Fediverse are about six years older than Mastodon.

    That's actually a very good suggestion.

    Hmm… though I might need some help… anyone can find an old image or code push for the first quote-post? Or, the earliest web archive link?

    AFAIK, Friendica was the first? Or, was it Identica/Laconica?

    OMG. How much were all the camping gears HyoYeon and Sunny brought in () E01? HyoYeon also brought a fireproof cloth to protect the grass and avoid an accidental grass/forest fire. First time I saw one.

    Someone working on:

    • Tumblr-like

    Skin-based:

    • Forum-like skin that turns a Lemmy instance into a "forums".

    What else is the Fediverse network missing?

    • An easy way to pull in data from databases like TMDB, and display it like a widget with necessary information visible (instead of a link-type with only a summary of the description).

    • A way to show what we are currently listening, watching, and reading, everytime we update our, say, BookWyrm or Goodreads profile. Maybe as an info minibar in our profile.

    We can also use LibreFM and LastFM for the listening part.

    youronlyone OP ,
    @youronlyone@c.im avatar

    @uriel Yep!

    They can begin by federating reviews and comments. Then maybe later make new items for sale federated, like how Drupal and Wordpress made new articles federated.

    “We” in the , , and Philippine English, .

    • “kami” = speaker + their group = “we” in Philippine English = no equivalent in any other English variant (in a way, it can be similar to the “royal ‘we’”)

    Depending on the sentence structure, “us” is also equivalent. However…

    • “tayo” = speaker + listener (+ their group) = “we” in Philippine English = “we” in any other English variant.

    “Us” can also be used depending on the context.

    So, when talking to a Filipino, or anyone who learned Philippine English (like most Koreans and Japanese), check first what they meant by “we”, as it could either be “speaker + their group” or “speaker + listener (+ their group)”.

    It can become a point of misunderstanding because of the difference in usage, as English doesn't have a separate word for those two scenarios of “we”/“us”, not like in Filipino, Tagalog, and other languages.

    (P.S. And this is why it is important to always ask for the context first before arguing or “reporting”.)

    How about in your native ? Do you have separate words for these?

    • speaker + their group
    • speaker + listener (+ their group)

    youronlyone OP Mod ,
    @youronlyone@c.im avatar

    @lizzard Yep, an English “we” always include the listener.

    It's why sometimes a discussion is derailed because people will start leaving comments like, “not all/everyone” even though the context was clear how the speaker used “we”.

    English is far too simple. Well, after all, according to some sources, English was a “peasant language”. Maybe that's why there are so many conflicts, English is so prone to being misunderstood. ^^;;

    But most, if not all, non-English languages, there are separate words for two context usage. And if not separate words, there's a clear understanding that a word can have two different context depending on how it was used.

    Sadly, in English, “we”/“us” is often understood as including the listener and everyone else.

    So, to avoid being misunderstood, you have to include clarification, which can distract the reader (and make things longer than necessary).
