Has anyone patched either Mastodon or Lemmy so that Lemmy's posts display the whole article in your Mastodon feed yet? At this point it seems like it might be as "simple" as changing the post type from "article" to "note" since Mastodon is now able to display a good amount of formatting and stuff inline #fediverse#ActivityPub
@liaizon as you alluded to in your reply, WP gets around this by assuming type as:Note which I disagree with from a protocol fragmentation standpoint. It implicitly acknowledges Mastodon as the dominant #ActivityPub player with clout to change the behaviour of others, and I stand against it.
#nodebb will send type as:Page (like #lemmy and #kbin), and we will work with @article_interop (and hopefully @pfefferle) to encourage Mastodon to handle it properly by modelling the appropriate behaviour.
Google provides a tool called PageSpeed Insights which gives a website some metrics to assess how well it is put together and how fast it loads. There are a lot of technical details but in general green scores are good, orange not great and red is bad.
I tried to ensure the tests were similar for each platform by choosing a page that shows a list of posts, like https://mastodon.social/explore.
The rest don’t seem to have prioritized performance or chose a software architecture that cannot be made to perform well on these metrics. It will be very interesting to see how that affects the cost of running large instances and the longevity of the platforms. Time will tell.
It is still early enough in the #redditmigration that #lemmy or #kbin can easily be replaced if something superior comes along. So if #piefed or #sublinks can develop their consumer facing products better and faster then they will inevitably get the community support. And since sublinks uses the existing Lemmy API it might have the best chance to do so.
You never know, the current Lemmy devs might be pushed aside tomorrow, anything could happen.
If you’re interested in checking out a #fediverse-based alternative to Reddit, come check out infosec.pub! It hosts a number of communities including one I’ve stood up for #cybersecurity / #infosec!
Ok now I’m a little sad. I just recently found the Artifact app, and now it’s shutting down. What app do you all use to read various types of news on all kinds of topics?
#Mastodon is slightly better since I get boosts in my timeline which with enough followed accounts turns into a kinda less-toxic “For You” algorithm
I use #feedly as my RSS platform and they suggest other blogs to sub to that are similar to ones that I already sub to
I’m also active on infosec-related #Lemmy / #Kbin servers which feed me new stuff sometimes (though still not as effective as Reddit is/was when I was using it)
There’s some attempts at building algo’s on top of Mastodon as well as folks building curated lists (#Mammoth being an example of the latter) that you could also look into.
Second, I made my first userscript: Improved Channel Select Menu! This is my first time making something with #JavaScript—a good bit of the code is based of raltsm4k's Floating Subs List—but I'm really happy with it! Earlier today, I released version 0.2.0 which adds a settings button and some new features. If you have any feedback, please share here.
#Lemmy and #kbin are technically forum softwares as well, even though their design lineage shares more in common with Reddit than traditional forum software. I assume you're already familiar with them 😅
Lastly, while @luceos and I have not spoken at length about integration, it is in our best interest to work together so that compatibility between our platforms is strong. All thanks to #ActivityPub!
I’m blocking probably hundreds of mags (all mags on Cloudflare sites like lemmy.world). The results of search queries are rich in posts from blocked mags. When I visit the post the sidebar shows that indeed that mag is blocked....
We're one week into 2024, do you know what that means? Time to clean up your #SNS “following” especially here in the #Fediverse.
Check the “dormant” accounts if you can unfollow them.
Check which accounts “moved”. Follow their new account, then unfollow their old account.
And maybe there are other accounts that you haven't interacted with in the past few months; and their content is no longer something that you are interested, you can unfollow them too.
If you still want to see their content, you can encourage them to use #hashtags and you follow those hashtags. Or, join a federated “group” like those powered by #Mbin#Kbin#Friendica#Chirp and #Lemmy.
Of course, depending on the fediverse platform your instance is using, there are probably better features to the content of users without seeing their content that is not of interest to you. A good example, #Firefish / #Catodon / #IceShrimp can do that through the “Antenna” feature.
Take some time to do this, and start your 2024 fediverse better than 2023.
I guess now we know the small reach of #Guppe groups is indeed a Guppe #bug or #WAI (working-as-intended).
I've noticed this since last year, after Guppe went down for almost a month(?); but I thought it was just me, or a temporary scaling issue with Guppe. But there's no denying it anymore, Guppe's reach is now very limited.
If similar software / platforms work fine (like #Friendica forums, #Chirp groups, #Kbin magazine, and #Lemmy communities) then the logical conclusion is this issue is on the side of Guppe groups.
Major communities still using Guppe groups should consider moving to Chirp, Friendica, Kbin, or Lemmy, if they want to reach #Fediverse network, until this is fixed.
@007 Ahh, really? During the early days of #Guppe it was working fine for any #Fediverse platform. I'm not sure when it stopped.
It wouldn't be a stretched that it stopped working for the entire Fediverse, except Mastodon, after it went online for almost a month(?). So, that means they intentionally blocked everyone else?
I guess #Chirp, #Kbin, and #Lemmy are the best options now. What's the point of using Guppe groups if it cannot reach the entire Fediverse.
@retrobeetism I have a similar experience. #Guppe groups (at least after it went offline for almost a month(?)) rarely works all other #Fediverse platforms (those I've tried). But #Chirp groups, #Friendica forums, #Kbin magazine, and #Lemmy communities, there are rarely any problems.
My brain tells me that the issue is with Guppe platform, since all other similar software works fine. They did something to break interoperability with the rest of the Fediverse, and created its own bubble with Mastodon.
@kbin kbin is constantly returning 50x and 404 errors to me for the last few weeks. It's literally unusable, even for browsing. What's going on? Is it just me? should I move on to a different instance?
You can try out #Mbin, it's #Kbin fork, it has issues too, but at leave there's multiple devs and all of them are active.(And anyone can become a dev, and actually send pull requests that will get merged)
Implemented menu icons in idkbin 1.3.6! They make the UI feel a lot more polished imo.
I also made these a standalone userstyle if you just want those.
Bug: blocks have no effect on search-generated timelines

Do any of you have that one service that just breaks constantly? I'd love to love Nextcloud, but it sure makes that difficult at times ( lemmy.world )
