Here's an interesting case-study on the way the media/press distort reality:
"Children must show ID to use social media"
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/08/children-must-show-id-to-use-social-media/

Why is the word "children" in there? These ID checks don't only apply to children, it's an ID check that everyone will need to abide by since there's no way to know if you're a child or not otherwise.

The headline should say "All UK internet users must show ID to use social media"

In fact, for Children there's no point in showing their ID since doing so would mean their account would be denied.

It's ONLY ADULTS who will be showing ID at all.

gimulnautti ,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@pre Sensationality.

But the incentives provided by current laws for online companies are indeed perverse:

The companies are made legally responsible for harms to under-age users ONLY if they have positive ID of their age.

No wonder companies avoid collecting positive ID from users like the plague.

gimulnautti ,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@philip @QasimRashid It’s cutting it close. Whether the state of Israel’s stated goals of remaining a jewish state is racist should still be up for debate, because it is a debate that can be learned from. It’s useful because ethnicity was a thing on the ground through 1920 to 1990, even if technically one can convert to Judaism nowadays.

The conflict is based on deep ethnically-based divisions and violence in the past, and it isn’t a worthless argument.

10-post thread by Angry Staffer: 1/...

Let’s talk .

There’s a lot of analysis out there that I believe is driven by a fundamental misunderstanding of the way fights wars.

Bottom line up front: Russia’s current goals in Ukraine aren’t necessarily victory, at least not in the traditional military sense.

We’ve seen evidence of this since even before Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. More on that later.

gimulnautti ,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@GottaLaff What’s funny is that Russia is actually always somehow forward about what it intends to do.

It’s just that the West doesn’t want to believe it would, but rather would believe the obvious lies it keeps telling, like in 2014 when ”no Russian troops were in Crimea”.

This week Belarus accused Lithuania of attacking with drones. A population that is already been manipulated they’re at war with NATO.

It’s all out in the open. The Russian empire wants to be reconstituted.

gimulnautti , to Cybersecurity
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

So let me ask you this simple two-part question:

  1. When is there going to be a cyber Hamas?
  2. When’s the first terrorist strike against Google going to happen?

It’s quite simple: Google is providing Israel the means to kill Palestinians. Seriously hitting that capability is going to help Palestinians stay alive.

Time Magazine now has at least part of the answer: & https://time.com/6966102/google-contract-israel-defense-ministry-gaza-war/

    @jerry That looks like Nuuttipukki!

    They would come in after christmas and sing, but if you didn’t give them food & wine, they might make trouble!

    Unmarried youth would join them as a troop, and join in the singing. If the people in the house were nice, they would nice too.

    Late at night, they might gather for a party.

    It was a bit like trick or treating.
